Negative Ease

Negative Ease

when the finished knitting measures smaller than the body for a snug, stretchy fit.

Negative ease means the finished knitted piece is smaller than the body measurement it’s meant to fit.
This creates a snug fit and relies on the fabric’s stretch to be comfortable when worn.

Negative ease is commonly used in items like socks, hats, mittens and fitted garments.

Example
If your bust measurement is 40" and you plan 2" of negative ease, the finished sweater measurement would be 38". The garment stretches to fit the body rather than hanging loosely.
