Ease

the difference between body measurements and finished garment measurements.

Ease is the difference between the actual body measurement and the finished garment size.

Ease determines how a garment fits — whether it sits close to the body, skims comfortably, or hangs loosely. It is not right or wrong; it is a design and comfort choice made by the knitter.

Example
If your bust measurement is 40": -A 40" finished sweater has zero ease -A 42" finished sweater has 2" of positive ease -A 38" finished sweater has 2" of negative ease The difference between your body size and the finished size is the ease.
