Every Other Needle

Every Other Needle (EON)

A needle setup where only alternating needles are in work, with one empty needle between each working needle.

Every other needle means setting the machine so only alternating needles are in work, with one empty needle between each working needle across the bed.

This setup is used when you want:

  • A specific needle arrangement for techniques like tuck, lace, or decorative stitches
  • Less resistance on the carriage
  • A transition between full-needle and specialty knitting

Working on every other needle naturally produces a fabric that’s more open and flexible, but the term itself simply describes the needle arrangement—not the finished look. Patterns often abbreviate this as EON.

Example
Cast on 40 stitches over EON.
