Scrapping off knitting with waste yarn to hold live stitches safely

Waste Yarn

Temporary yarn used before or between knitting sections—removed later.

Waste yarn (also called scrap yarn) is used at the beginning or between sections of knitting that will later be removed. Machine knitters use waste yarn to: • Cast on before the main yarn • Knit test rows before shaping • Separate pieces of knitting • Protect garment yarn from the cast-on comb or weights Choose a smooth, contrasting yarn that’s easy to see and remove. It’s often paired with a ravel cord or used in the scrap ’n ravel cast-on.
Example
When ending a knitted piece, leave live stitches by knitting a few rows of waste yarn.
