Scrap 'n Ravel

Scrap 'n Ravel ( )

Cast on with scrap yarn and a ravel cord before starting garment yarn—like a provisional cast-on.

A popular cast-on method using scrap yarn (waste yarn) and a ravel cord before beginning with the garment yarn. When the ravel cord is removed, live stitches are picked up and finished. Steps:
  • Cast on with scrap yarn.
  • Knit several rows.
  • Knit one row of ravel cord.
  • Begin knitting with your garment yarn.
This technique protects delicate yarn from the cast-on comb, provides a stable base for hanging weights, and is ideal for hung hems or any project where the starting edge will be finished later. In hand knitting, this is similar to a provisional cast-on.
Example
Use a scrap ’n ravel cast-on for a sweater hem to create a clean folded edge.
