Gauge Swatch

Gauge Swatch

A small sample of knitting used to measure gauge and test fabric before starting a project.

A swatch is a small sample of knitting used to measure gauge and test fabric characteristics before starting a project. Machine knitters use swatches to check: • Stitch and row gauge • Yarn behavior (shrinkage, drape, or stretch) • Tension settings and finishing effects Always record your stitch and row counts, the tension dial setting, and any notes about the yarn. A properly measured and labeled swatch helps ensure your finished project matches the intended size and fit.
Example
Knit a 60-stitch by 80-row swatch at tension 6 to measure your gauge before casting on the full piece.
