Gauge

Number of stitches and rows per inch (or per 4" or 10cm)

Gauge is a measure of the number of stitches and rows in a specific area. It’s commonly measured as: • Stitches and rows per inch, or • Stitches and rows per 4" (10 cm) The term gauge can also refer to the pitch of a knitting machine—the distance between needles. For example, a machine with needles spaced 4.5 mm apart is referred to as a standard gauge machine.
